There are some foods to avoid if you want to prevent being overweight. Sure, we all have a cheat day here or there but many of these foods are creating the epidemic of obesity, especially in the United States. 

Obesity is classified by the AMA (American Medical Association) as an existing disease.

Over sixty-six percent (66%) of North Americans over the age of twenty (20) are overweight, followed by over thirty-three (33%) classified as obese.

What is the Difference Between Being Overweight and Obesity?

To determine what qualifies as overweight versus being obese, to be overweight is to be 25 lbs+ over your target weight for height and BMI (Body Mass Index) target and to be obese is 50 lbs + over your target BMI.

In the past thirty-five years, obesity in the world has doubled! It continues to be an epidemic and there are certain foods that have become the primary cause for the problem. There are the foods to avoid whenever it is possible.

It is very important to be cognizant of these foods to avoid and know which foods are commonly causing problems.

In order to overcome the obesity rates which are becoming rampant in the world, here are some of the culprits which are causing havoc in North America and the World general populations.

1. Artificial Sweeteners –

These are found in lower calorie foods including all diet sodas! They have less calories along with less sugar but the body still reacts to the “sweetness” driving insulin levels up, according to research studies. Individuals who drink at least two diet sodas a day may increase their waistlines by six times the norm. This is one of the commonly overlooked foods to avoid.

2. White Sugar –

foods to avoidConsuming white sugar can sabotage any weight loss regime as it increases the craving for sweets! The substance does not contain any sort of vitamins or minerals but helps the body pack on the pounds through continuous sugar addictions. 

Meaning, white sugar can cause you to eat more foods to avoid and cause more weight gain. 

3. Cheese –

Contains a large portion of fat and it is also hard for the body to digest. When digestion delays, the body suffers. Fat holds nine calories/gram! Protein and carbs hold four calories/gram.

4. Gluten-Free Foods –

Many of these foods are packed with sugars and starches, it is important to read labels before purchasing as this can be a very eye-opening experience for those who consume large amounts.

5. Potatoes –

All forms of potatoes are considered fattening. It is one of the most popular foods to avoid that people are instead indulging in daily.

Interestingly, one study finds eating one serving of fries can cause a weight gain of over three pounds! The same research found that eating one serving of potato chips can cause just under two pounds of weight gain. Think about how often people eat both fries and chips.

They are two of the most popular foods sold today and yet, one of the most important foods to avoid, too!

6. White Carbohydrates –

These come from white rice, white bread, and starches to increase the glycemic index. In order to lose weight, choosing brown carbs is best which come from natural foods and grains. Therefore, white carbohydrates should be added to your list of foods to avoid. 

7. Oils and Fats –

The normal calorie and fat equals one hundred and twenty (120) calories each tablespoon. Olive oil also contains a lot of calories although it is healthier for the body.

8. Alcohol Consumption –

Alcohol increases the release of cortisol in the body. This hormone breaks down the muscle and increases fat retention. According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, individuals who drink two servings of vodka during one hour suffer from a decrease in fat metabolism of 75%.

It is a very common culprit of weight gain and obesity throughout the world. Moderate your consumption because alcohol is a major culprit for significant weight gain. 

9. Processed Food –

These foods do not contain any form of usable nutrition for the body to operate let alone lose weight naturally. Even “diet” ready to go meals are not healthy and are loaded with sodium content. The more individuals eat the more water retention.

Processed food should be avoided at all costs but sadly, it has become a major reason for obesity throughout the world. These are some of the most important foods to avoid as they serve no kind of nutritional benefit.

10. Processed Meats –

These are high in fats, sodium content and calories. This includes all lunch meats, hot dogs, sausage, and bacon. The American Institute for Cancer Research strongly endorses the avoidance of processed meats for safe eating. It is high on the list of foods to avoid to remain healthy and lean.
